Who Killed Laura Palmer? The question that haunted me for months following the Season 1 cliffhanger of the popular Twin Peaks television series. Twin Peaks first aired on April 8, 1990 on ABC, the brainchild of mad scientist David Lynch. Twin Peaks had a fantastic looking cast of young unknowns (must have been something in the water), coupled with a story woven in mysticism and the black arts. It was the story of a sleepy little town located in the mountains of Washington state in which a young girl named Laura Palmer was brutally murdered under some rather strange circumstances. An FBI agent named Dale Cooper comes to town to aid in the investigation and things begin to unfold as Special Agent Dale Cooper digs deeper into the circumstances surrounding Laura’s death. I remember the frenzy that followed its debut. All over the country people were having Twin Peaks season 2 parties where cherry pies, donuts, and “damn fine” cups of coffee were served. They clutched onto logs that “one day would have something to say.” The country was captivated by mysteriously original characters that kept us guessing, the Log Lady, Sheriff Harry S. Truman, Special Agent Dale Cooper, Diane, the Giant, the Little Man from Another Place, Senior Droolcup ... no show since has come close to assembling a more interesting collection of eccentrics. Twin Peaks season 2 was a cult phenomenon that took the country by storm as David Lynch, its ring leader, led us into a world that confounded us with each new plot development. Lynch’s formula was brilliant. He concentrated on character development and slowly revealed plot twists as fans of the show, like voyeurs, watched in anticipation of what was to come. Each episode ended with a cliffhanger that had everyone running to their phones to discuss the potential resolutions for next week's episode with friends. Back then we had to wait an entire week before discovering what was to happen, but now with the series on DVD, you can't help but pop in the next episode. I strongly encourage anyone interested in the greatest, "who done it," television series of all time to pick up a copy of Twin Peaks Season 2 on DVD. The second season of Twin Peaks Season 2
carried the momentum the show had established as a mid-season
replacement into the following year. Resolutions to the main
plotline of who killed Laura Palmer were completed by the middle of the
season, at which point many argued that the show had jumped the shark.
I contend that this is when show actually became more interesting.
After the murder mystery was resolved, writers of the show turned to
Cooper's past as well as the mystical surroundings of the Twin Peaks
community for inspiration. Cooper's arch nemesis, Windom Earl,
begins a very interesting cat and mouse game with our favorite special
agent and we begin to uncover the mysteries of the sprit world that has
it's grips on this sleepy little community. Twin Peaks Season 2
explores many of the mysteries of the world beyond our own though the
warped mind of David Lynch. |
